Practice Focus
Dr. Huihong Qiao is of counsel to our law firm. She is a Registered
Patent Attorney before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Dr. Qiao is
versatile in the following technological areas:
- Biomedical Engineering (development of a bioengineering system
for the production of hirudin – a naturally occurring polypeptide
in the medicinal leeches that is a blood anticoagulant,
construction of high-yielding yeast expression plasmids,
production of an antisense MCP-1 [monocyte chemotactic
protein-1] expression plasmids, construction of gene replication
system as potential gene therapy for the prevention and
treatment of atherosclerosis, expression and purification of
recombinant human heat shock protein 90 which was regarded as
a target of tumor immunotherapy.)
- Immunology (immune responses towards cancer,
immunotherapy, innate immune, cytokines and chemokines, cell
signaling in immune responses, function of immune cells,
proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic cells, and
immunological techniques)
- Infectious Diseases (study of toll-like receptors, identification of
responses of innate immune cells to infectious agents, activation
of signaling pathways by infectious agents, alteration of
expression profiles of receptors and ligands, stimulation of
adoptive immune responses)
- Herbal Medicine (systematic identification of biological activities
of multiple herbal extracts, isolation and purification of active
compounds related to raising levels of white blood cells in cancer
patients or stimulating production of platelet cells)
Background
Dr. Qiao has a keen interest in medicine and the application of
biomedical research techniques to the advancement of health. After
receiving her MD and MS degrees, she remained in China to conduct
research in cancer biology, cardiovascular disease, and herbal medicine
at biotechnology companies.
Dr. Qiao then moved to the U.S. and acquired advanced research skills:
first in allegies and infectious diseases at the National Institutes of
Health (NIH) and then in immunology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Simultaneously, Dr. Qiao was developing a strong
interest in protecting and promoting the discoveries in medical
research. Subsequently, Dr. Qiao received her JD degree at St. Louis
University School of Law, where she concentrated in health and life
science law.
Dr. Qiao is combining her versatility in research experience and her
insights at start-up companies and major national laboratories to serve
inventors in a broad range of technology. Her pleasant personality and
diligent work habits are helpful to clients.
In her spare time, Dr. Qiao takes on hiking, gardening, and listening to
music. As a caring person, she treasures friendship and enjoys helping
others.
